Introducing the first in the "Precious Wood" series, the "Karin-Kobu" (Amboyna burl)! Limited to only 50 pens worldwide.

From Platinum:

Our Izumo brand, which encapsulates traditional Japanese craftsmanship, introduces the new “Precious Wood” series, featuring rare and highly valued woods. This wood-barrel fountain pen is based on the concept of enjoying the beauty of the wood's unique "Moku" (heather: a rare and valuable pattern that appears due to the twists and bumps of the wood) and the aging of the wood barrel. For the Izumo "Precious Wood" series, we have created a new form that allows you to feel the texture of the material even more. By eliminating the step between the cap and the body, we have created a body with a sense of unity, and by intentionally eliminating the clip, you can feel the texture of the wood-barrel even more. By keeping the top coat to a minimum, you can enjoy the aging of the wood-barrel. Since it is made of wood, the main body will get dents and scratches as you use it, but please enjoy it as it changes over time as a ”nurturing fountain pen.”

The first wood in the Izumo ”Precious Wood” series is ”Karin-Kobu (Amboyna burl).” Karin (Amboyna) is a plant that is distributed in Southeast Asia and South Asia, and the growths that form on the trunk or roots of trees, which rarely occur due to external factors, are called burl. The burl are intertwined with irregular and complex patterns, creating swirling curves and ripple-like heather, which attract the viewer's attention.

The Karin-Kobu fountain pen is set in a wooden gift box with a 30ml glass bottle of Platinum Blue-Black ink, a Platinum Blue-Black ink cartridge, a Platinum converter, and a pen pillow from my cherry wood.

The origin of the name "Izumo"

Japan has its pride in its four distinct seasons. All with an intent to live in harmony with nature while creating and developing a rich culture with the beliefs in the presences of gods in nature. Since the dawn of time, it has been believed that the gods reside in all things and that there is a common ground where the gods throughout Japan gather together once a year. This is "Izumo", a great influence over the structure of Japan and the heart of its people, thus contributing to the prosperity of the city.

The word "Izumo", which expresses the many-layered cloud formations rising vigorously to the sky, had been handed down to the present day. "Izumo" also expresses the idea of progress and creation.

Based on such an idea, Platinum Pen created a highly original luxury writing instruments brand named "Izumo" with the best intent of expressing the wonderful Japanese traditional art and the quality material, to be passed on to the future generation. The company founder Shunichi Nakata was born in Izumo city, the city in Shimane prefecture in Japan where "IzumoTaisha" Shurine is. The magnificent influence of nature and a mysterious history exist. Derived from such fact, the "Izumo" series was created with the best wishes of obtaining the momentum of clouds rising to the heaven.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill this fountain pen from an ink cartridge? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses proprietary Platinum ink cartridges, which are available in a few colors.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.

For even more information about fountain pen cleaning, check out our Fountain Pen 101 video blog post.
