A gift from the sea. The Laban Abalone fountain pen series is made of authentic abalone shells from New Zealand. Beautiful shimmers in a rainbow of swirling iridescent colors, along with the natural spiral votex of the shells, create an irresistibly beautiful pen.

Gunmetal trim, including the clip and grip section, complement the abalone for a sleek, elegant look. The two-tone German-made #6 steel nib is engraved with the Laban logo.

This fountain pen accepts a standard international converter (included), short standard international cartridges, or long standard international cartridges.

Heavy, but great looking

I like posting the cap, on other pens but I don't like the extra weight of posting on this one. My hands are also large so it feels too short without posting, quite the conundrum...

I purchased the extra-fine, and have noticed it has a slight flex to the nib. Not sure if it's supposed to, but I'm getting noticable line variation and that's neat. When I'm not pressing at all it produces a very clean, thin line that looks and feels great. I sometimes have hard starts, but I'm also running cheap cartridges at the moment, so it may be the ink. This is a delight to look at, it will certainly turn heads. I think it's a little too gaudy for formal events or meetings but it will shine in casual.

Excellent pen and great value

I bought this pen because I wanted a decent pen to toss in my travel case. Carrying around my Visconti homo-sapiens always felt like playing Russian roulette.

So it came in and I expected it to be similar in performance to my Pilot Vanishing Point and my Conklin Deco. The final verdict? It is right in line with those pens actually. The lines it puts down are very heavy for an extra fine, I cannot imagine how fat of a line a medium would put down. The experience is smooth and pleasant.

The build quality feels excellent, very similar to my Conklin deco or Pilot Vanishing point, no notes. The abalone used appears to be a thin vineer shaped around a central barrel, it's highly attractive and eye catching. Much of the hardware and connecting pieces are some kind of metal. I am not going to drop a shaving of it in a spectrometer to get the exact composition. The pen is substantial and heavy. Posting the cap might make for a heavy writing experience for a lot of people.

This pen is worth the money and gives you a luxury look for a reasonable price tag.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use this pen with ink cartridges? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A cartridge is small, disposable, sealed plastic reservoir that holds fountain pen ink. These come pre-filled with ink, and typically you just push to insert them into place and you'll be ready to write!

This pen uses standard international ink cartridges, a common size which is available in many colors from various brands.

You can learn more about how to actually install an ink cartridge on our blog, or in this video tutorial:

How do I use a converter? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

A converter goes in the place of where the ink cartridge would normally go. From there, you can fill your fountain pen from bottled ink.

A converter is a detachable and refillable ink reservoir that allows you to use bottled ink in a cartridge-accepting pen. Typically you will install the converter into the grip section, dip the nib/feed into the ink, and twist or pull the converter knob to draw ink into the converter.

We have a great video showing how to use a converter here:

How do I clean this fountain pen? 8EDA1617-F73A-4DAF-8245-6D2BF4ABEB7B

It mostly comes down to flushing out the pen with water, and sometimes a little bit of pen flush if the ink is really stuck.

We put together a blog post with step-by-step instructions, or you can watch the video here:

We recommend a good cleaning every 2 weeks, and any time you change ink colors. Water will usually do the trick, but we recommend you use our Goulet Pen Flush if the ink has been left in the pen for a while and could have dried up, or when you’re switching ink colors.
